Knysna National Lakes Area in Southern Africa

Take a break from the mad city rush and get down to the Knysna National Lakes reserve, the country's second national lake area (Wilderness National Park is the first). The 15 000 ha Knysna Lagoon, dominated by the rocky bastions of the picturesque Knysna Heads, is an area of unsurpassed beauty and splendour and an absolute haven for various watersports. Boating, angling and diving to name but a few.

This splendid resort is an area known for its forests, lagoon and friendly people. Travelling the 500km from Cape Town along the scenic Garden Route is a pleasure in itself. A temperate coastal climate gives Knysna a reputation as an excellent place to unwind.

The lagoon, characterised by sandbanks, salt marshes and reed beds, teems with life, providing life-support for a multitude of various organisms. One of the most peculiar and interesting creatures to be found here is the endangered Knysna seahorse (Hippocampl~s capensis)

The Knysna National Lake Area has the honourof being home to the endangered Knysna Seahorse, which drifts in a carefree manner amongst seaweed clusters, enjoying the calm conditions of the lagoon. During the summertime Grey Plovers, Greenshanks and Sandpipers are amongst the birds which can be spotted, while the winter season sees Egrets, Cormorants, Ibises and Gulls taking sanctuary in the lagoon. With it's amazingassortment of bird life, and the beauty of the surrounding forests, visitors have continuous opportunities for bird watching and photo opportunities.

The best place to find accommodation is in the town of Knysna, where private bed and breakfast accommodation will provide you with a comfortable and pleasant relaxation opportunity.

The variety of activities available to visitors and locals in the town of Knysna, include water sports, hiking, picnicking in quiet and secluded spots, and forest trails which allow for hours of exploration on foot or mountain bike. There's also a wide selection of water sports such as fishing, sailing, windsurfing.  Powerboats are also permitted in some areas. Water-skiing is allowed in Swartvlei and at the Island Lake.

With a national airport 70km away in the town of George, Knysna is easily accessible and definitely worthy of a visit, so pack your swimming trunks and come enjoy the cool waters and lazy sunshine of the Knysna National Lake Area.
