Golden Gate Highlands National Park in Southern Africa

Golden Gate Highlands National Park

Safely tucked away in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains of the north-eastern Free State, lies the Golden Gate Highlands National Park. The 11 600 hectares parks name originates from the glorious shades if gold casted by the sun on the sandstone cliffs of the park. The area is famous for its captivating scenery, invigorating climate and the accommodation offered in hotel rooms, rondavels and self-catering chalets.

This kingdom of nature is home to a huge variety of mammals - black wildebeest, eland, blesbok, oribi, springbok and Burchell's zebra - and birds, including the rare bearded vulture (lammergeier) and the equally rare bald ibis. The park is also home to various rare and indigenous flowers that include the Arum Lily, Watsonias, Fire Lilies and Red-Hot Pokers

The highest point in the park, Generaalskop, is a magnificent, vibrant tapestry of red, yellow and purple hues as its warm shades merge with the cool mountain shadows towards evening.
