Bontebok National Park

Safely tucked away in the rough well-fortified Langeberg Mountains, the Bontebok National Park serves as a sanctuary for a variety of species such as the bontebok, Cape mountain zebra and red hartebeests. Situated within the Cape Floral Kingdom, Bontebok find itself in the richest of the world's six floral kingdoms. The beauty of Bontebok National Park is absolutely captivating with a feeling of tranquillity and peace all around. The picturistic Langeberg Mountains creates a splendid colourful scenery that you'll never be able to forget. The region received an average rainfall of about 500mm per annum, occurring mainly during early summer and winter.

The Parks is proud to promote its achievements in biodiversity conservation, from the endangered fynbos veld type, coastal Renosterveld to the namesake bontebok! Once these colourful antelope numbered a mere 17, but through effective management and dedication we are proud to affirm that the present world population amounts to around 3000. Bontebokhas a lot to offer all nature lovers. The animal life at the park is very divers stretching from indigenous animal life to over 200 amazing bird species.

Take in the idyllic scenery created by the Breede River on the western border of the park. A bird watching kingdom filled with a cosmopolitan range of all shapes and feathers, or try to catch the 'big one' fishing at this refreshing swimming spot. Bring your bike and cycle the wilderness on a winding bike trip, or hike through our paradise.

Accommodation

Bontebok as a brand new rest camp, established in 2007. The "Lang Elsie's Kraal" was named after a Khoe-Khoe Chieftain who lived here with her clan in the 18th century.

There's 10 chalets, all of them housing up to 2 adults and 2 children (or 3 adults), situated in the heart of the majestic Breede River valley and the Langeberg mountain range.

All the new buildings are wheelchair friendly, and a further two of the 10 units are "special-needs adapted" with bathrooms and living spaces which meet current best practice for people with special needs.

How to get there

Bontebok National Park is situated +6km from Swellendam, 240km from Cape Town and 540km from Port Elizabeth.It is an ideal stopover on the way to the famous Garden Route.
