The Chacma Baboon (Kaapse Bobbejaan)

Papio ursinus

The Chacma Baboon is a common species nearly throughout South Africa, as it can be found in both Savanna and mountain areas, sometimes even open grassland. Female baboons are visibly smaller then the male baboons, typically weighing between 13 and 18 kilograms as opposed to the males weighing between 26 - 45 kilograms

Though baboons are omnivorous their diet consists mostly of fruit, grass, bulbs, tubers, flowers and leaves. Occasionally, when available they enjoy scorpions, lizards, various insects, birds and bird eggs, even young antelope.

Baboon can typically be found in troops of approximately 30 - 50, but troops as large as a 100 or more is not uncommon.

The dominant male baboons protect the young and female baboons when danger is encountered.
